Distribution Planning

Distribution Asset Planning and Consulting Services

Electric Power Utilities continue to invest in their distribution electrical facilities to support reliability initiatives and modernization.  System Planning has grown in complexity due to the introduction of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and system wide load growth within an aging infrastructure.

ControlPoint Technologies’ team of Distribution System Planners includes Principal Engineers and Consultants to provide the analysis needed to support short-term and long-term planning studies.   We will review the existing Area Electric Power System (EPS) to provide a Risk Assessment of Assets and alternative plans to accommodate the future needs of the area.  Areas with Distributed Energy Resources in place or planned will be included in the Planning Study development.

Planning study deliverables will include analytical results, compliance verification, mitigation options and constructability review.  Our consultants can provide the utility with economic analysis, project sequencing, and future load conditions to determine the best path forward.  Our team will provide an executive summary with presentation to utility stakeholders.

Services include:

  • System Modeling

  • Impact of Distributed Energy Resources

  • Power Flow Analysis

  • Area Protection Review

  • Feeder Analysis

  • Load Growth Studies & Forecasting

  • Reliability Analysis & Risk Assessment

  • Distribution Circuit Conceptual Engineering

  • Substation Scope of Work

Electric Reliability Planning

Municipal and Rural Electric Utilities face new challenges on their systems that may impact reliability. The introduction of these complexities may include: Load Growth, Housing and Commercial development, Interconnection of renewable energy sources, Residential Solar, Aging infrastructure, Electric Vehicle charging stations, and Microgrids.

A system assessment and long term plan provides the details needed for utility stakeholders to plan improvements as their systems grow more complex.

Distributed Energy Resource Planning

In recent years State Regulators have amended Net Metering Rules making it much more desirable for developers to install Distributed Energy Resources (DER) onto electrical power distribution systems. These drastic changes have contributed to a large amount of DER installations, such as Photovoltaic (PV), Battery Storage, and Wind Turbines, onto local distribution systems.
